Some of the eats at Aisuru Sushi.

Aisuru Sushi

Alex and Aisuru are a little similar in a couple of ways – we both share the corner of William and James Streets and like us they do things a little differently. Bacon, cream cheese, sundried tomato and pickled mackerel sit alongside the usual suspects in the list of ingredients on the menu. There’s something for everyone here – from sushi rolls & yakitori to creamy popcorn shrimp and everything in between! Vegetarian? This is the right place.

Before the rush at Babooshka.

Babooshka

With neighbours like Francoforte and Superstar Waffles, this end of Williams Lane had enough evening cred, but someone needed to step up and cater for the breakfast and in-between crowd – and hello Babooshka. The coffee is great but it’s really the food offering that’ll have you coming back. The Dukkah Eggs and the Tsar’s breakfast are a must, as is the breakfast named after the establishment – the Babooshka. That’s three knockouts and at least three visits…

Dining room at baby mammoth

Baby Mammoth

Soul food with a South African heart. The menu here changes from time to time making return trips inevitable – a shame that! Goat Bunny Chow always seems to make the cut though and why not – delcious chunks of Durban-style goat served in a hollowed out bun (cue the drool). These guys also do some pretty sharp lunch specials too…..just check their website for opening times as they sometimes change!

Balthazar

Balthazar

Straight out of New York, this dark, intimate and wonderfully special restaurant is perfect for that special event. The food is brilliant and the wine list would entice a sworn abstainer to have a glass. Delicious.

Neighbourhood

Bivouac Canteen & Bar

A bivouac is an improvised campsite – often a temporary one at that. Thankfully, Bivouc Canteen & Bar isn’t going anywhere anytime soon with superbly well executed food and warm hospitality. A curious, middle-eastern slant that runs through the frequently evolving Med “ish” menu makes return visits to this relaxed and casual eatery pretty easy!

Brika

Brika

AuthenticTaverna is the promise here and they’re as good as their word. The menu is primarily greek in focus but you will find influences from right around the mediteranean – the sharing friendly food lends itself to trying many (sometimes too many!) dishes. As good as the food is it also deserves mention that the wine list features some cracking Greek wines – the kind of wines that make you remind you there is more to the wine world than the usual suspects.

Flipside Burgers

A proud little West Aussie burger “chain” (if you can even call them that). Originating from North Freo, the guys at Flipside create beautiful yummy burgers from locally sourced ingredients. You can sit in or takeaway – another reason we love them so much is they also own Mechanics Institute, next door, with all their burgers available in the bar!

Fork and Spaghetti Sign

Francoforte Spaghetti Bar

It’s only open for dinner, the pasta isn’t housemade and there aren’t many seats – not a lot to write home about right? Wrong, Francoforte is the “F” in fantastico with well priced and tasty dishes that won’t leave you hungry. There are classics on the small menu as well as something for the more adventurous.

They do serve food here but you don’t go the Helvetica for the food. You go for their scotch, and they’ve got a lot of it. So sit back, relax and enjoy. One of our favourites in the City!

Los Bravos

The team behind No Mafia serve up another small bar and eatery that trades in good food and drink with a heavy Spanish accent. With 100 seats and alfresco dining, the size of the venue has allowed its owners to create a relaxed, easy atmosphere.

The menu provides options for everything from a few light tapas to a full meal. A partnership with Perth seafood supplier Kailis has led to a number of dishes brimming with fresh local catches prepared with Spanish techniques and flavours. Did you say manchego croquettes and grilled chorizo?!

La Cholita

La Cholita remains a great place to pick over plates of modern mexican fare and let your eyes and taste buds browse the 100 or so tequilas slouched on shelves behind the bar. “Si, but is it auténtico?” you ask. We say tequila…

Lalla Rokha

Lalla Rookh

Named after a 1930s gold mine in the Pilbara, this eating house, right in the bustling business centre, is run by some great young hospitality professionals. Their Italian food is pretty amazing and they win us for sourcing local ingredients and supplying lots of locally made drinks.

Long Chim

We’re not the only ones in Perth a tad excited about the arrival of David Thompson’s food to Perth…. Since opening, Long Chim has become one the most exciting places to eat in town. Known as the ‘godfather’ of Thai Cuisine, David Thompson’s menu is as good as it gets and the cocktails are equally worth popping in for.

These guys take their meat seriously and slow cook ribs and brisket until its soft, sticky and finger licking good! Just a few minutes walk towards the city near the corner of King St and Wellington St, these guys are open for lunch and dinner – oh and their beer list is pretty good too.

Inside Pleased to Meet You

Pleased to Meet You

Situated down the road on Roe Street, Pleased to Meet You used to be a little tricky to find – thankfully they’ve ditched their old “38” sign and replaced it with the name of the venue. Once inside it can be a challenge when it comes to choosing what to eat, with a small plate menu that’s as interesting and varied as you’ll see. Beef tongue ruben bao anyone?

Superstar Waffles

Superstar Waffles

Your sucking down long strands of spaghetti at Francoforte when you notice across the arcade a steady stream of people coming and going from a little joint called Superstar Waffles. It’s waffles, waffles and waffles here with some cool waffle-ey* takes on some classics like S’mores waffles and Banoffee waffles as well as some ripper classic flavour combinations. It’s in the name, these truly are Superstar Waffles.  *Waffle-ey is not a real word but we like it.

Laneway view at Toastface Grillah

Toastface Grillah

Yes the coffee is good and yes the venue is the requisite amount of “cool” but what this place is all about is writ large in it’s name – toasted grilled cheese sandwiches. There are some out there combinations like the Pear Grillz or the Danny Zuccho but regardless of what you choose you’ll never leave disappointed. Keeping it real – the space is frequently used for small gigs for local & up and coming artists.

Varnish On King

With a great little moody bar hidden away down the wooden stairs, this little drinking hole goes back to its’ building’s roots, with wooden floorboards and exposed brick walls. Varnish prides itself on its good selections of whiskeys so if that is your poison of choice then this is the place for you.

Varsity Burger

Varsity Burgers

This is a hole in the wall burger joint at its tasty best. You can sit al fresco amongst the graffiti on the walls or grab a takeaway. They only do double burgers on the menu and its great value for money and our top tip: don’t skip the wings.

Exterior at Viet Hoa

Viet Hoa

For almost 30 years Viet Hoa has been dishing up good honest Vietnamese food to those lucky enough to be in the know. The venue is a number of scales below flash and their forays into “Aussie” Chinese classics are a take it or leave it affair but on a cool evening any of their pho options are as good at their price point as you’ll find in Perth and your guaranteed the freshest produce – so important in pho – as the number of customers coming and going dicate as much!
