About us

Alex is an independent hotel owned by four families that have a long association with food and beverage, both hospitality and manufacturing. Our endeavours have included Little Creatures Brewing, Wildflower, Como and the State Buildings, Bread in Common, Coogee Common, and Stormflower Vineyard to name a few.

We hope Alex provides a comfortable and relaxed sanctuary in the heart of Perth’s arts and cultural precinct, and a feeling that you are surrounded by caring and capable people, carefully considered and functional design, delicious food, and excellent drink choices.

The environment is important to us.

Alex attempts at all times to choose local, reduce waste, and conserve energy. Indirectly the owners are invested in the not for profit Line in the Sand Group to restore and protect our coastlines, and the Weelhamby Farm project alongside the Carbon Farming Foundation to directly offset emissions, and learn more firsthand about best practice agriculture.

Environmental initiatives

We are passionate about reducing our environmental impact and are therefore partnering with the team at Wright Solutions to better manage our waste. Using organic composting, rubbish sorting, and detailed recycling, we successfully divert approximately 70% of our waste away from landfill. Through our composting alone, the equivalent emissions of 30 x 50L petrol tanks running to empty has been avoided!

You can help us by separating your recyclables from other waste, ready for collection by housekeeping. You may also notice that we have multiple bins in the mezzanine and on the rooftop for the same purpose.

Located in the city’s cultural heart, we are just steps away from the state’s best galleries, theatres and museum. Our friends and partners include Co3 Dance Co, Black Swan Theatre company, Perth Festival, Fringe Festival, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA), Strut Dance Co, Art Gallery of WA (AGWA) and The Western Australian Museum. Pay our friends a visit – we are just a short walk from the Heath Ledger State Theatre, The Western Australian Museum, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA), Art Gallery of WA (AGWA) and The Blue Room Theatre.

Mano A Mano

Carefully sourced and thoughtfully roasted, we are a specialty coffee roaster, online retail store and wholesale coffee provider. We strive to create specialty coffee for the masses, from our hands to yours.

Common Bakery

Hand-shaped, preservative free, daily baked breads, made from organic flours, salt, spices and fruit, and a slow sourdough process.

Stormflower

A wine adventure from the incredible dirt in the Wilyabrup pocket of the Margaret River region. Stormflower is all about producing the best wine we can from our small block, with all fruit from the vineyard.

Coogee Common

Restaurant, lounge bar and gardens at the old Coogee hotel. Seasonal and chef’s tasting menu’s are built around our own produce, harvested daily. What we can’t grow, grind or ferment, we source from local, sustainable producers, who share our commitment to clean, ethical food production.

Bread in Common

Break bread, in Fremantle’s historic West End. Our hand-built, wood-fired bread ovens, named Hansel and Gretal, are the heart and soul of our bakery and restaurant.

Gordon Street Garage

Micro-roaster by day, restaurant and wine bar by night, in a former garage with a backyard garden.
