With the upcoming WA school holidays 2022 approaching on the 24th of September, you might be starting to begin to think about what family activities in Perth to do with your little ones. Here in Perth there is lots on these school holidays, which even the adults can enjoy.
So if you’re looking for inspiration, you’ve come to the right place.
West Australian Museum Boola Bardip
The WA Museum Boola Bardip recently went through a major refurbishment and expansion, which was completed in 2020. The new museum consists of a beautiful mix of contemporary and existing historic architecture – including The Old Gaol building which was built in 1855, the Jubilee building built in 1899, the original art gallery built in 1908 and Hackett Hall – which is the State Library reading room built in 1913. The result is a stunning architectural space that celebrates our past, all whilst serving as a functional meeting point to be enjoyed by many for years to come.
The WA Museum’s permanent exhibition rooms features stories of WA’s past – importantly delving into our rich indigenous history. The Museum serves as a great educational resource for adults and children alike, as you are able to learn about different facets of West Australian history, in an accessible, visually-empowering way.
Keep an eye out for current special exhibitions, which update every few months or so. Currently, Dinosaurs of Patagonia is exhibiting up until Sunday the 23rd of October 2022, which is guaranteed interactive fun for the entire family.
Scitech
Scitech is a childhood staple, and for good reason. Scitech allows is a great place for little minds to delve into fun hands-on activities, and learn how things work through playful science. Along with their permanent displays – they have often have special exhibitions.
Some great shows for children this Perth school holidays include:
Scitech Science Presenters delve into the science of thermodynamics – which means exploring how temperature works. This intriguing show is a great option for a family day out.
Quiet As A Mouse (For ages 3-7)
This puppet show is fantastic for younger children, and investigates how things make noise – all through the perspective of an Australian jumping mouse who lives in the wall of a child’s bedroom! (Pretty cute, huh).
The Perth Zoo
Located in South Perth, the Perth Zoo is accessible by car or by ferry from Elizabeth Quay Jetty. Our wonderful zoo is a fun family day out, where you can roam freely. Spend the day visiting a wide array of different animals, and stop for a picnic for lunch on many of the grassy spaces dotted around the zoo.
From the 24th of September until the 9th of October (the entire school holidays), the zoo will be open until 8pm each day, for their Late Lights display — where illuminated animal sculptures will be installed for the whole family to enjoy. Extended animal viewing is open up until 6pm (except for the Nocturnal House which will close at 5pm). Bring your own dinner, or enjoy a bite to eat from the food trucks!
